Arstechnica reports:

As of now, you can’t:

Distribute the devices to another person

Offer them to the public

Provide them to another person

Otherwise deal in them

Not exactly great news for anyone hoping to profit from the now white-hot demand for the PS Jailbreak. In addition to barring distribution, the court ordered that a limited number of the devices “be released to [Sony] for such analysis, including destructive analysis, as the Applicants think fit, upon the payment to the applicable respondent of its retail price for each such PSJailbreak Device.”

At least in Australia, Sony is in complete control of the PS Jailbreak’s inventory, and will soon be happily tearing the units apart to learn everything there is know about them, and then the firmware patching of the PlayStation 3 will likely begin.

Modchips, in Australia, are perfectly legal

Mod chips are actually legal in Australia, on something of a technicality: by the time a mod chip allows a pirated game to be played, the copyright violation has already occurred. It’s the act of distributing or copying games that courts are worried about; without the content, the chips themselves are useless. In the US and much of Europe, the act of circumventing protection measures is itself illegal, making it easier to keep circumvention technology away from the public.

This is a temporary injunction, but since this device allows the games themselves to be copied—much like mod chips from the Xbox-era— judges may not be so forgiving. The USB sticks don’t just allow pirated games to be played, they give you the ability to copy the games yourself.

Sony has until August 31 to make its case for the continued ban against the sale of the devices. If they’re not able to make a compelling legal argument, the PS Jailbreak should be offered for sale yet again… although one could forgive Sony for dragging its feet in releasing the inventory.

A L-O-T more information can be found at PSX-Scene.

Don’t go popping that cork off the champagne bottle yet now that PSJailbreak is out. Reports say that there is a chance for the PS3 to detect the jailbreak and thus, consequently, get your PSN account banned, similar to how the XBL does it.

According to SKFU and RichDevX, while you are logged into PSN, the Backup manager game ID (LAUN-12345) could be logged or recorded by Sony. This could then allow Sony to see if you are using the PSJailbreak/clone. As it is, Sony actually does impose bans on both PSN accounts and PS3 systems, resulting to the 800A227 error code.

So if you want to steer clear of trouble with Sony while still enjoying PSjb, it probably would be best if you don’t go online and play first to avoid detection.

But those of us out there with older computers try and drag out the upgrading process on their older rigs. I am sure a lot of individuals out there want to watch HD content on their machines only to find out that they stutter their way into oblivion.

What options do we have out there to keep us out of this pit of despair?

We could always upgrade, but we just forked out $700 last year and cannot do it again for a while. The simplest way to do this would be with software.

CoreAVC software

The CoreCodec CoreAVC High Definition H.264 video codec is based on the MPEG-4 Part 10 standard and is the video codec used in AVCHD, Blu-Ray and in HD-DVD. H.264 is the next-generation standard for video, and CoreAVCâ„¢ is being recognized as being the world’s fastest H.264 software video decoder.

The efficiency of CoreAVC in ‘software’ is often compared to be faster than other solutions that try to rely on ‘hardware’ to increase playback performance of H.264 video.

A lot of the videos that are out there on the net are in the H.264 variety. The best way I have found out is to use CoreAVC along with Media Player Classic. This seems to bring my CPU usage WAY down on a dual core rig with 4 gigs of RAM. But the biggest benefit I have seen using CoreAVC is what go to remaster my home videos that come off my Canon HV30. They are 1080i right off the bat and my rig went to a crawl when I used to work with them let alone view them. When I discovered CoreAVC, it made my life a LOT easier.

Got an older rig? Give the CoreAVC demo a try and see if it breaths life back into that rig. Let me know if this has helped you or you have any questions.
Fixed AVCHD mode results in Muxing Failed under some conditions.
Due to the PS3 downscales 720p which is not exactly 1280×720 in AVCHD mode to 480p, such videos are now transcoded and black bars added.
The green bar removal patch appears to work fine with odd resolution 1080p video so no transcoding needed.

Added x264 High Quality transcoding mode (almost lossless, file size is about 3x original),
Added option to convert incompatible audio to PCM instead of AC3 (requires HDMI audio decoder).
Added support for ASS subtitles.
Added Stop/Pause button.
Added detection of bad manual installation (cause of mkv parse error, please use the installer).
Added option to disable automatic update.
Added use standard Win32 API to run tools, should help with running in emulator on MAC/Linux.
Added support for DTS-ES audio.
Added support for VORBIS audio.
Added support for multi-core XviD encoding.
Improved x264 transcoding speed on multi-core processors.
Improved x264 transcoding speed by optimizing settings.
Fixed VirtualDubMod error when transcoding codec is set to XviD but no transcoding was required.
Fixed wrong audio codec muxed in XviD when the source mkv did not have an AC3 track.
Fixed transcoded audio unplayable or with dropouts/clicks on some decoders.
