UPDATE 2: I received an email from David Karlton directly at MediaMall. He confirmed to me that Netflix is now live for beta testers. Here is a direct quote from the email.
Hi Nathan,Thanks for the mail and interest! Glad to hear that the community is so interested in getting online media over to the TV. We have believed for years that consumers are interested in seeing all sorts of online videos directly on their televisions. The biggest hurdles have really been video quality and complications for setting things up. Lots of devices and network and bandwidth headaches. We’re trying hard to make it as simple and straightforward as possible.
We’re super excited about the Netflix release! As you may know, we’ve pushed a preliminary release yesterday that includes Netflix support. There are some remaining bugs, but we’re working them out.

UPDATE 1: After posting a topic at AVSforums.com, several members checked for an update to see if Netflix support was live yet. Unfortunately if you try to update it directly from within the program, it will not find anything. The key is to download the software from the website again. Even though it is the same version, it should have the Netflix ability built into it.
After regularly checking the Playon blog, it seems like PlayOn is ready to release their newest beta version which will support Netflix for the Playstation 3. I was never able to really test the beta because I am on a Mac, but I will once again try to run it in VMware once it is released. I am so friggin’ excited I am about to pee my pants. Hulu support was a pleasant experience from what I have gathered from several users over at AVSforums. This program right here could very well be the breaking point the PS3 needs. I have been hell bent for the past 9-months to provide tutorials for users to stream movies, pictures, and mp3′s to their PS3. But PlayOn will most likely fill that empty void I have been looking for. Netflix support. That’s right Netflix support for the PS3 finally.
dkarlton reports that they have been debugging this version like crazy. They have received programming support directly from Netflix to get this plugin functioning which is a definite plus. It may help iron out a lot of potential problems as a result. But there are a lot of underlying questions that have me pondering.
What resolution will PlayOn let Netflix movies display at? dkarlton claims they support higher resolutions.
Will there be DTS, AC3, AAC, or will it be Dolby Pro Logic audio support for the streaming?
Will there be a slim chance that Playon can upscale the content to HD?
I am not quite sure if MediaMall plans on adding other support for streaming media. But if they plan on moving in that direction, they may have cornered the market. Tversity, Twonkymedia, Medialink, etc. will not hold a candle to this program if they branch out a little more. Pay very close attention to this site as the beta should pop up soon. If the program is released, please leave a comment to let everyone know.

Just a quick update — we plan on pushing a more stable release of PlayOn within a couple of days. The first round of beta testing of the newly added Netflix service helped us wrangle in a few annoying bugs, so things are looking good. We’ll of course keep folks posted on our forum and blog.

please help me understand… i may be missing something…
wouldn’t it be easier (and faster as far as throughput) to just hook my laptop directly to my HDTV instead of putting PlayOn on a PC then sending the data to the PS3 then to the TV?
what are the benefits of PlayOn vs. direct connection to TV?
If you have a media center PC, then by all means utilize that to play Netflix and Hulu. PlayOn is for those of us who do not have a HTPC. Throughput doesn’t really matter in this case as PlayOn is basically downloading the information and just broadcasting it to the PS3. Then the PS3 to the TV. You aren’t losing any quality this way. You utilizing your PS3 as a medium for your viewing, nothing more.
PlayOn is working on other ways to get local media sharing working for us. If they get that working, PlayOn will end up be an all-in-one product. Local media sharing, Netflix, Hulu, etc. PlayOn is taking a step in the right direction for all PS3 owners.
Until yesterday, PlayOn was the only option we had to watch Hulu due to the PS3 browser being non flash-9 compliant. And PlayOn is currently the only way you can watch Netflix with your PS3.
The main reason I advocate PlayOn is that is keeps one less gadget out of my media center. I don’t need a laptop there to ruin the aesthetic appeal of my setup.
Did that help?
yes! many thanks.
Glad I could help.
There is another way to watch your Netflix movies, in the PS3. You need to have installed Linux on your PS3, the use rdesktop to connect to your Windows machine, rdesktop let’s you watch the conten the display of your windows machine in your PS3 with linux.
You can then play your Netflix movie in your windows machine, while having the display on your linux (PS3)
Hello, can you please post some more information on this topic? I would like to read more.
Thanks, very useful information.
Well worth checking out in my oppinion.. saves the drive to Block Busters on a stormy Friday Night!!
The PS3 is a great console. They’re reliable machines with excellent multimedia capabilities, free online service, and great games! The game library is starting to grow, you might here that the graphics are similar to the 360 but, developers have yet to use the full potential of the system. Of course the graphics will be the same if the game is from a third party, those titles are basically the same regardless of the platform they are released on. Plus there are about 41 PSone titles (as of june ’09) available for download such as Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil, etc. And even though the controller looks the same as the PS2 and PSone, it too has many new features (wireless, motion control), this makes PSone backwards compatability that much better. 360 is a great system. But so is the PS3, it has a lot of new features, and the familiarity of the PlayStation family. http://www.gamesliveon.com
I can’t tip because I didn’t like
